The Finishing Touch

The Finishing Touch: California House Finishes and Custom Finish Matching

The right finish brings a piece of furniture into harmony with its surroundings. It highlights the wood’s natural character, establishes the tone of the piece, and connects it with the room’s broader design. For interior designers, finish selection is an essential part of creating a space that feels thoughtfully composed.

At California House, our made-to-order approach gives designers and their clients the flexibility to choose a finish that supports their vision. Our premium hand-applied finishes bring out the beauty of solid hardwood, while custom finish matching capabilities provide additional possibilities for projects with a specific color direction.

Bring Out the Character of the Wood

A beautiful finish begins with the material beneath it. Wood species differ in grain, texture, and natural color, and those differences influence the finished appearance. The same finish can look different on Maple, Rustic White Oak, Northern Red Oak, and Walnut, giving each combination its own character.

Choosing the wood species and finish together allows designers to shape the overall effect. A lighter finish can emphasize an open, relaxed feeling, while deeper tones can introduce warmth and richness. The goal is to find the combination that best supports the room’s architecture, furnishings, and atmosphere.

Multiple Steps to a Delightful Finish

A beautiful finish develops through a carefully controlled sequence of steps, each contributing to the wood’s rich color, depth, and final appearance.

Every piece begins with a clear wash coat, which helps control how the wood absorbs the following color applications for a more even result.  After sanding the wash coat, a non-grain-raising (NGR) colorant is applied and allowed to dry, establishing the base color. Stain follows and is wiped by hand, adding richness and highlighting the wood’s natural grain. This hands-on attention helps bring the color to life while preserving the character that makes each piece unique.

After the color steps are complete, we spray and sand a sealer to prepare the surface for two coats of conversion varnish topcoat. These final coats seal in the beauty and provide a durable, protective finish for furniture made to be used and enjoyed.

Together, these steps create a finish with depth and warmth—one that complements the craftsmanship beneath it.

Create a Connection Throughout the Room

Game room furniture often occupies a prominent place in the home. A pool table may be visible from an adjoining living area, or a reversible-top game table may also serve as a dining table. Its finish helps connect that piece with the spaces around it.

California House’s finish choices allow designers to coordinate tables and seating with surrounding cabinetry, flooring, and other furniture. A complementary finish can carry a palette from room to room, while a contrasting tone can give a statement piece greater presence. Both approaches can create a cohesive result when the choice is intentional.

Explore Custom Finish Matching

Some projects call for a finish beyond the standard selections. A designer may want to coordinate with an existing dining set, a distinctive cabinet finish, or a material sample already approved by the client.

California House’s custom finish matching capabilities offer a way to explore that specific direction. Providing a physical reference sample and identifying the intended wood species gives our team a clearer basis for evaluating the desired look. Contact us early in the design process to discuss the project and the requirements for developing a custom match.

Because wood is a natural material, matching involves more than color alone. Grain, texture, undertones, and the way the wood absorbs a finish all affect the result. A successful match considers how the finished pieces relate visually within the room.

Specify with Confidence

Reviewing a physical finish sample alongside fabrics, flooring, and other materials helps designers make informed selections. Seeing those materials together under the project’s lighting can reveal relationships that photographs and screens may not accurately convey.

For clients, that attention to detail makes the finished furniture feel personal and purposeful. For designers, it provides another opportunity to deliver a complete vision.

Whether selecting a standard California House finish or exploring a custom match, the finishing touch helps turn beautifully crafted furniture into a piece that belongs.
